wiring a light fitting

The present fitting had 3 red wires to live, two black wires to neutral and one black wire to earth. The copper wire (earth?) was not attached to anything. Any advice as to why this was? I believe I should wire all red to live, all black to neutral and copper to earth, is this correct?

No, one of the black wires will be a switched live.
Check the FAQ as this has been covered so many times.
