I have a standing floor light which holds 10 x 20w Halogen Capsules(12V). I am unable to source lower wattage frosted halogens and have been looking into fitting a dimmer instead as the light at full strnght is too bright. Do dimmers exist as adaptors? i.e can i pug something into my wall before the lamp to work as a dimmer or do i have to fit the light staight into a dimmer socket in the wall - if so, what type of dimmer do i need?

This is the type of thing I am looing for but only appears to be of use for incandescent light not halogens. Plus I've got 200w to dim and this only does a max 120w.

Sorry, I should have added that you might want to check that the transformer in your lamp is of the dimmable type and that you'll need to de-rate the dimmer you use, so you may need to find one with a capacity of 400W.
