Vertical or horizontal? I'm talking about those old Victorian brass ones.

definitely left to right - think about how you would grab the handle to turn it.

if it was vertical, your hand would be in an awkward position!

Although it is all down to personal preferences, if perhaps your fitting a door handle for someone that is perhaps aged, weak, has muscular problems etc then some thought has to go into making it as easy as possible for the person to operate.

If you were to use how you hand naturally grabs something then a 45 degree angle from upper left falling to lower right would actually be the way to fit it.

However people prefer nice parallel lines so its either fitted vertically or horizontally depending upon how people prefer it.

As you are going to grab hold of it on one side of the door and turn it anti clock wise, it ought to be vertical on that side, so your turning turns it horizontally. On the other side of the door you would turn the handle clockwise so you would need to grab the handle in the horizontal position and turn it to vertical.

That way the hand can easily grab it & the wrist does not need to go through an excessive un-natural twist.

So..... depending upon which side of the door it is, its either vertical or Horizontal. :D
