FJ 3296 - seemed to be finishing too soon. Watched it on most commonly used cycle - skipped several stages in rapid succession. Other cycles that don\\\'t get much use work fine. Sometime seemed to be ok, but can\\\'t trust it!

Sounds like your tacho magnet is loose. Just working on similar problem on the zanussi WJS1197W. Mine is not just loose it is lost too. Sure you are asking where the tacho magnet is if it is the first time you have heard this. Don't panic. If you can lay the machine on its back you will see the back of the motor facing you. You will see two (yellow) wires going to back that is closest to you. If the clip and castellated plastic looking casing are still in place you would need to prise the clip off with a flat screw driver. The clip is circular and holds casing in place. If they are not in place you are likey to find the clip and castellated case on the floor under the machine. If you sweep under machine keep the rubbish until you find all the bits including the tacho magnet! When you remove the clip the casing can gently be romoved with the two (yellow) wires to reveal the tacho magnet. The magnet on the zanussi wjs1197w motor is mounted on a white plastic shaft with threads to screw into back end of the armature. (The other side of the armature in the front of the motor supports the belt/pulley mounting. Just so we know which side is the front and rear of the motor). You can screw the magnet back in and refit everything back. You do not need to remove the motor.

Please note. BEFORE YOU BEGIN ANY DIY WORK TAKE PRECAUSTIONS> SWITCH THE MAINS PLUG TO THE OFF POSITION AND REMOVE THE PLUG. ENSURE ANY WATER IS DRAINED OUT OF THE WASHING MACHINE. TURN OFF THE WATER TO THE WASHING MACHINE. IF THE WASHING MACHINE IS LOCATED UPSTAIRS ENSURE YOU SPREAD SOME OLD CLOTHES AND RAGS TO ABSORB ANY BACK FLOW FROM MAINS FEEDS AND THE DRAIN.

Further and final correction.

In the Zanussi case: What screws in the armature is the magnet. The coil is the one that is fed by the two yellow wires. The physics is that in this case the magnet moves by rotation while the coil is stationary. The relative movement causes an induced voltage/frequency which is sent back to the onboard computer to control the speed of the motor. If the tacho magnet is loose or the yellow wires are broken then the computer/controller would not be controlling the motor hence the skipping of stages.

Please note that the coil is housed in the casing and it is fed by the two (yellow) wires. If the casing has fallen down re-house the coil in the case and refit. Note: Do not adjust the coil unless it is proven to be broken. Normally screwing the tacho magnet back and refeitting everything should be all that is required.

By contrast, in the Haynes Manual for washerdrier & tumble drier the coil is mounted on plastic screw and moves with the armature and the magnet is stationary.

Now, have you fixed your machine yet? Give us some feedback.
