We have just come back from holiday and have returned to the pipework and header tank of our boiler making some ungodly noises.

Our bedroom is in the eves so it sounds incredibly loud, like rushing water or steam. We have only got the hot water set for an hour in the morning and hour in the evening at the moment. This clanking etc tends to happen around these times.

We had someone out during the day and he couldn't recreate the noises and thought there might be too much air in the system so he just bled all of our radiatiors.

Since then, if anything it has probably gotten worse or more frequent.

I have also felt some mild heat coming from the boiler/fire front when neither are on.

Does it sound like a flue blockage, blocked pipes or something more sinister?

All advice greatly appreciated!

Boiler thermostat or gas valve have gone allowing too much heat into the system.

If the clock is turned off then its probably the gas valve gone but there is a couple of faults that could still cause it to be the boiler stat.

If its noisy with clock set for on then its probably the boiler stat faulty

Have you checked the small expansion tank that fills up the system is filling up? Might be a blocked cold feed pipe.

leadlotus, with blocked cold feed pipe, how would the F&E tank fill up? Just curious, not trying to knock you off your perch.

I have turned the boiler thermostat down to 1 and this seems to have stopped the clanking and banging for the meantime. There does seem to be a patch of damp on our bedroom ceiling which I can only assume is coming from the expansion tank?

If the clanking has stopped now the stat has been turned down surely that would indicate the stat is working?

Does this begin to sound more like a blockage in the system somewhere?

It sounds to me as if the system may be pumping over when hot.

The expansion tanks should be inspected when its making these noises to see if water is coming out of the vent pipe.

The pump speed should not be on "3", if it is then turn it to "2".

When a boiler stat fails it usually goes out of sync first rather than complete failure
So position1 could be equivalent of 4 , position 2 =5 etc. etc

The noises you had sounds very like it was getting far too hot and boiling over.
