The bulb in my table lamp blew so I replace it but no joy, tried another bulb, still no joy. Changed the fuse in the plug still no joy. Socket works fine so a bit lost. I can only assume the wiring in the lamp has somehow shorted but is this a normal occurrence? The lamp has never been moved.

Have you accidently changed a blown fuse with a blown fuse? Test the fuse.
Check all connections at the lamp and the plug.
Has your table lamp got a dimmer in its supply line. It may have died with the lamp....
