Hi all!
We are planning to remove an existing window, make a much larger opening and put in French Doors. Building Warrant guy said he needs to see Structural Engineer report to check out lintols, etc.
Can we just discuss this with engineer or will he expect to see an architects drawings of same?
I don't really want to pay for an architect if I don't need to - he got enough dosh off us for the extension!
Thanks for any advice,
BB

The engineer will work out the beam size and if a basic sketch is required, then he should be able to do that in the with fee. But normally no drawings are needed

If you use a standard steel lintel, then you should be able to do this work without the need for an engineer, if this is just a normal opening

Hmm, are you planning to reuse the same lintel then? Wierd they would want a report on the lintel otherwise..

All it seems is that the BCO (which you refer to as Building Warrant guy) is asking for structural calculations/details for the proposed lintel, which is standard procedure. As for drawings, surely the Architects' drawings you already have are sufficient?
