why don't you take one to a carpenter and ask them to make some the same?

sorry but from a joiners point of view, It would be a real shame to replace the original 1940's spindles with cheap 90 pence matchsticks.
I would definitely get a local joiners shop to copy the spindles regardless of the cost just to maintain the whole look of the house.
