I like to fix batten(s) to the wall(s) behind the bath for the lip of the tub to rest on when everything is installed and levelled up. A few cleats on the battens, fixed to the timber under the lip of the tub does a lot to stabilise and secure the tub.

Generally, the more rigid you can make the installation, the better. But bear in mind you may need to get to the waste fittings and other plumbing for maintenance in the future.

You may need to add some framing to fix the bath panels to anyway, so it might as well lend some extra support to the tub.

Any movement at all between the tub and the wall will lead to premature failure of the sealant, and leaks.
