The taps in our bathroom look like fairly normal ones, but I can't get them apart. I unscrew the index cover and undo the screw underneath, but can't remove the handle. It doesn't seem to be just stuck; it feels really solid and all four taps are the same. The shroud just turns without unscrewing.

Any ideas?

They will just be stuck slightly corroded, gently tap underneath the lobes at opposing sides they will eventually come free.

I've tried various tools, from hammers to pulley extractors, in order to get the handle off. Nothing works.

It seems to me that if I can raise the cowl as far as the handle, I can probably get at the nut underneath. Unfortunately, I haven't managed that, either. The existence of the usual screw beneath the index confuses matters, too.

I pour boiling water over the tap head to expand it and then tap from underneath.

When reassembling I coat with silicone grease to make it easier to take apart next time.

I only wish other plumbers would be so helpful!

try using a bit of heat (blow lamp) and gently heat and tap the crosshead from underneath.
