Hi

We have just had our bathroom done out. We have a ceiling light but there is also a wall wire where a spotlight was used for the vanity unit. We have got rid of this unit and bought a single spotlight to put here over a mirror.

There are two exisitng wires coming from the wall- black and brown where the spotlight is going to go. The light fitting has an earth wire on it and mentions that it must be connected to the earth wire. Our problem is we don\\\'t have one only the two wires. Would it be dangerous if we put the light up without this? What are the consequences? Thanks

Black & brown? An unusual combination - either black & red or blue & brown are the standard pairings. Can you furtle about and see if there are any others? You need to do that anyway to see if you can find an earth....

Yes. And illegal. As might be fitting it without notifying your local council's Building Control department first. Read this: http://www.niceic.org.uk/downloads/NL139supp.pdf to find out about bathroom zones. If this light is going to be in one of the zones, then by law you are supposed to notify LABC in advance.

Also check that the light is suitably IP rated for the zone it'd be in.

Death, possibly, if something went wrong. (OK - most unlikely, but possible).
