We took in six rescued battery hens at the weekend, from a batch of 4000 obtained from disgusting set up in the locale. I've never been a fan of battery farming of any description, but seeing these poor little sods up close has brought it home just how appalling the conditions they endure really are. They generally live this "life" for around a year or so, and then, after their production drops to fewer than six eggs a week, off they go for slaughter, to end up in dog and baby food, or compost. Nice.

They are almost devoid of feathers, totally spooked by the new arrangements and are painfully thin; we've lost one overnight and currently have another one that is on its last legs, which we found lying outside the coop two days ago, near death and which was only revived by spending two hours tucked inside my fleece, another hour in the airing cupboard (we resisted the gas mark 4 option...) and being fed by pipette. Since then it's been up and down, brief flurries of life giving rise to optimism that it just might survive - hence being called Gloria :) - closely followed by it giving a very good impression of Cheyne-Stokes breathing and keeling over.

Barn hens are afforded slightly better living conditions, but the bar is set so low by the battery hens that it's all relative.

They may "only" be chickens, but there really is no justification for treating any animal in this fashion.

thing is they never get any quality time ,,with a rooster.

so how are they doin it , it must be artificial inhenimation
i get mine from a local farm delicious,
;)

I stopped buying battery chicken eggs when a customer I did a job for gave me some of her free range eggs from her chickens as a 'tip'. The difference in taste is truly amazing. Shortly afterwards I found a local farm that sold free range eggs, and now, every Wednesday the farmers daughter knocks on the door offering some of that days freshly laid eggs. Can't beat 'em, if you'll excuse the pun.

the difference in taste is only noticed if you like good food, ;)

there are a lot of people that just eat anything and wont notice the difference,
and becuase of the price difference they ACTUALLY like the taste of battery eggs

I totally disagree with that. I can assure you that I am not a connoisseur of anything, at all! But someone with half a tongue and brain could immediatley tell the difference. It was like night and day. I wouldn't feed battery eggs to my dog these days.

er, you said someone with half a tongue and brain,

the ones i mean have a quarter of each only ;)

LOL... touche!

But if my nicotine encrusted, Jack Daniels tarnished palette can tell the difference, so can most folks!

hey , it,s them missing out,

and that means more for us

i buy local farm milk aswell same kind of taste difference.

Haven't found a local farm that sells milk yet  Would definitely give it a go though. I think a lot of it is about supporting the local 'little man' rather than lining the pockets of one of the supermarkets

and so we should

Couldn't agree with you more.

I currently buy bread, eggs, coal , wood and veg from independant sellers rather than give my money to the big three. And to be honest I wouldn't give a toss if they were treble the price, the locals would still get my hard earned!

another plus on that, would be, we will be more healthier!

still them poor chickens tho, without rooster's,

makes me want to cry :p

You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with a chickens sexual requirements. Should I be worried ? :D
