1st Feb 25% tariff on Mexico + Canada, 10% on China

I have just read that US spends 3.4% of GDP on defence. I thought it would be a lot more. Why is Trump now asking us to spend 5%? A phrase about pots and kettles springs to mind.

Tell me Filly, who pays the tariff on Canadian imports into America?

Let’s take oil: tariff of 10%

You could argue America will no longer use Canadian oil……but it’s piped directly into USA refineries, does America have alternative pipes ready and waiting?

I would love to know what he's up to. It is a very strange tactic to not let the other side know what you actually want.

But I do think that Trump is doing tremendous reputational damage to the US. Who is going to trust them now to honour treaties and agreements? China could well be the winner from all of this.
I think Trump is good with regards to world peace. He's a nutter. Russia, N.Korea and China are all run by nutters. If they chucked some nukes at us, Kier would probably say "Let’s not bring ourselves down to their level" while a bomb drops on his head. Trump on the other hand….well, they don’t know, do they? One thing a nutter is reluctant to do is pick a fight with another nutter. He might be nuttier than they are…..

All the economic opinions i've read and heard agree it's a bloody stupid idea - it'll end up raising costs for manufacturers and prices for consumers at the shops. Make Americans Poor Again, is what will happen. Turkey's voting for xmas.

I don't disagree with that, I'm more shocked that you think the same won't happen in reverse. Canada are implementing retaliatory tariffs but you seem to think prices in Canada won't rise.

Does anyone know the answer to this. I have been reading that the whole set up of refining oil in the US is incredibly complex. Can they just substitute alternatives in to the refineries in the northern states which currently get crude from Canada?

Also, a good article here explaining why the US exports and also imports so much crude. In a nutshell, a lot of their refineries are of the wrong type.

Tell that to the nutters in the midfle east

One things for sure. Notchty needs to ditch his unit trust.
yeah I sold my S&P 500 tracker, annoyingly I only did it over the weekend so lost a bit on the opening market this morning (from Friday), but still a decent gain since I bought them in the autumn.

I might just stick money in premium bonds for a while as Trump is gonna cause market volatility for a while.............I think? - Im no market expert

Trump has imposed 25% tariff on everything from Canada and 10% on oil

so American prices will rise immediately -American businesses can simply go elsewhere overnight

Sure Canada will suffer potentially a great deal ong term, but in that scenario so will America

A) because USA tariffs wont hit their businesses for a while

B) Canada tariffs are only on certain goods -most of which like beer, Canadians can switch to domestic products

C) Trump has put 10% on oil -that puts up the price of everything

Trump has done a Liz Truss :ROFLMAO:

become leader and within days cause a market shock

Sadly, he doesn't have a torey party to kick him out

I reckon there's a lot of truth in this. People think world politics is extremely complex and of course, on many levels it is. However underneath, I reckon this basic sort of powerplay also plays an important part.
