I read an article in the NYT a few months ago, arguing that the reason there have been so many deaths was down to the tactics. The point being made was that if Israel had launched a much bigger invasion and occupation, they could somehow have taken out Hamas without most of the civilian casualties. I can't remember any more details, though.

Nope. Israel are now talking about moving civilians to safe zones after being security checked. I don't believe their motives for that but why not do it at the beginning. It didn't have to be this way, but it is.
