Help/advice needed - noisy mains even with all taps turned off.

That will be a bit of a job as the only bit of pipe I can get to between both stopcocks is this bent section coming up through the floor at the back of a cabinet and even that will be a mission without removing the dishwasher and housing. Everywhere else is out of bounds as the floors are boarded and have LVT on them. Could it be fitted after (or instead of) the house stopcock?

What I plan to do first though is replace both wc fill valves and maybe fit one of those shock arrestors.

It’s all been fine again since turning the water on and off. Does water pressure in the mains build up overnight?

It is possible that you have a second original stop cock in the house that impacts pressure/flow.

Possible but I don’t think so. I’ve lived here since 1990 and have only known one stopcock and it is in the same position as the houses either side of me but now I have a leak! May or may not be connected with the noise but when I turn the stopcock off indoors, it stops all water (obviously) but I can hear a hissing from the street stopcock and the meter is showing use. I’ve measured it at 30 litres an hour which seems a lot. Trouble is, 40% of the run is under my drive and another 20% is under a boarded and laminated kitchen floor. I think (and hope) that the house insurance should cover it as it says:

I can’t see exactly from the street box but I have copper coming up in the kitchen to the house stop cock and when I built a front extension in 2000, I had to box in a copper pipe that went through the footings trench so I’m assuming copper all the way.

What sort of specialist would I have to get out to find the leak? Are there specialists that can find the leak if it’s under my driveway without digging a trench all the way across?

IME, if your main is copper from street to house then adandon it.
It will likely be failing in several places and as each leak is repaired, the increase in pressure will find the next weak spot.

Get your insurers to look at moling a new main and going into the house as near to the internal main that you can see. If this means you have to come up and out of the ground to then go through a wall, you can use an insuduct to protect it from freezing.

No noises for the past few days. Checked the meter yesterday, no water usage when off, no sounds of water running through the pipes/stopcock/meter.

Update 2:
Utility company turned up today to replace the street box. Couldn’t complete it today as the box was within a certain distance of the street lamp post. They are coming back to finish it tomorrow and they said they have to have a another van/truck with some kind of grab arm on it that holds and supports the lamp post while they dig out near it in case it topples over. I might get a visit from @Highway Man. Failing that, they might send someone with a decent set of pins.
