I am looking at re-opening my old fire place and have seeked professional installers. I was advised by the install to insert a 6x6" hole in the place the original fire place opening was and get a chimney sweep around to ensure the flue was clean and clear.

I've created the hole and can see into the original fireplace cavity, however it is particularly filled with what looks like rubble/bricks/pourd concrete and 3 dead birds.

Also there seems to be a hole in the back of the cavity wall, lower right side and I can see what appears to be a metal structure of some sort. Could this be the rear of next doors fire place?

Even though this rubble seems to have blocked the flue, smoke is still drawn into the hole.

I've concluded this rubble must have fallen from above taken the birds down with it and upon impact on the bottom of the fireplace must have ruptured the cavity wall?

See attached images.

Has anyone come across this before and are able to advise.
