Many thanks for your reply and thanks for the correct spelling. I'm not touching the roots so I'll have a go.

I have a Budlia (not sure of correct spelling) which has grown quiet tall as it has'nt been cut for many years. It does not produce much flower. Is this because it has not been pruned/cut back? Can I cut it down low - would it recover such a shock? When can I do it?

I have the same problem my plaster is blown too! I think possibly because of damp coming down the chimney. In my opinion I thought I hav'nt got a lot to lose as the plaster/wall will have to be sorted anyway.

I am sure the surround and hearth have gone but the opening and chimney must be still there.

I am about to open up a fireplace that was filled in some years ago in an old farmhouse and on an old copy of estate agents details was described as a low grate hearth with brick surround. Can anyone please give me any suggestions as to how to go about this?
