Thank you for all your replies, but I have now been able to find the hidden fixings. They are behind the yellow insert on the top of the cover. Just had to remove the insert with a large wide flat headed screwdriver.

The engine cover on eBay is a different model, although it shows three screw holes, as can be seen on mine there are only two visible on the top of the cover, there are no others visible. Many thanks

Many thanks for your help, the manual has no instructions on how to strip it down. Also, McCulloch would supply any instructions other than taking it to a one of their agents.
