but its an existing opening, most likely with an existing lintol over it, which is being made wider to 2.7m. Surely its a simple case of removing the old lintol, propping and making opening new size and insert new lintol. Ta da! Catnic (or most other manufacturers) do lintols up to 4.8m...

I see your point. But... when would this have been picked up? Building regs is ok as more often than not an inspector makes site visits, but in terms of planning, does anyone ever actually come out and check? The vendors would have had a set of approved drawings / certs to hand over to...

Ive just done the drawings for the exact same situation. Ive specified to leave the manhole in place, raise the hight to new floor level and fit a double sealed screw down cover. The trick is to use am 'inset' cover which is recessed so that the floor covering can be laid inside the cover...

isnt the main question "whats above the beam"? tell us whats holding up. Is it near the corner of a building? or in the middle of wall? wind loads may be affected. Its not simply a case of knocking a hole in and stcking a big beam in. Also... structural works need building regs :wink:
