Thanks for all the replies but I think a few have gone a bit off post. What I was hoping for was for someone to recognise the problem, maybe they had same symptoms, and suggest what component was likely to be wired wrong and how it should be. The wiring is through a Honeywell 10 way box...

Hi, ChrisR, Have looked at the wiring, there are 2 wires in with the grey, earth from cyl stat and a black one from programmer. I'll show the sparky your post, I know he had the diagrams you linked to so hope those wires should be ok. Thanks again.
