    Partially opening chimney breast

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to give it a go myself. I'd been quoted around £1000 just to open it up to accommodate a decorative fireplace which I thought was a bit steep

    Partially opening chimney breast

Hi, attached photos show the kind of inset fireplace I want in place. The chimney breast as it is now and the one in the front room which has already been opened up and has an electric fire in there

    Partially opening chimney breast

Hi, I want to install a decorative victorian fireplace and surround into my chimney breast. It's been bricked up so obviously needs opening up to accommodate the fire basket as this would protrude into the chimney cavity. As the hole will be covered by the fireplace is there anything stopping...

    Gate gap

Thanks John, I think that may be the best option.

    Gate gap

Could be an option but I have no means of ripping them down.

    Gate gap

They are wooden gates, yes. Redwood, I believe. I was planning on using hook and band type hinges (24")

    Gate gap

Hi, I've just received a lovely pair of swan necked gates that I bought online. The problem is, they're 30mm (total width) less than what i had ordered. The gap between my two walls is 3120mm. Less 2off (100x100 posts) 10mm gap at either end and the middle = 2890mm They sent me gates with an...

    Leaded glass units

I want to keep as much of the period joinery as possible and just change the glass to something more decorative. Also it is not exactly secure being single pane.

    Leaded glass units

Hi I'd like to replace the single glass panes (in the photo shown) with double glazed or security glass ideally with a leaded pattern insert. I've priced up a single pain in proper stained glass and it was over £350 for one of the windows, any idea how much a uPVC one would be? Thanks

    Front door painting

Hi, I'm going to paint my wooden front door. I'm thinking Miranol potentially, in a dark grey colour, but I'm a bit concerned the surface must be absolutely perfect with this kind of finish. I've sanded it down today, but what do I need to do about these area around the profiling? Do I scrap...

    Brickwork concerns

The lower few course have been repointed with a cement Mortar at some point, by the looks of it. Could this cause problems with all the other courses being Lime Mortar. The problem seems to occur where the cement Mortar stops.

    Brickwork concerns

Thanks, I see what you mean but I think it's the lighting. I'll get a better pic tomorrow. So it is possible that joint erosion has caused the efflorescence. ? I wonder what caused the joint erosion in the 1st place.?

    Brickwork concerns

The chimney is on the other side of the house and the roof is fine. The bottom course's of bricks are OK, it's just those few rows.

    Armored cable to the shed

Theoretically it should be buried, but I had it clipped to my fence in our last house.
