I used an ordinary drill for the holes then I used another drill bit that made the hole big at the top. I used a manual screwdriver and the screws just kind of went down into the floorboard. But it took ages and ages to do all that, so I gave up after a few floorboards and went back to hammer...

I started using nails but was advised on the Forum to use screws - to be honest, screws were so hard to put it and took me so long, I went back to the nails just to finish the job !! :oops: the boards I used screws on don't seem to be much better really and have split worse than the nailed...

hiya I am using B&Q light oak floor varnish on my new floor boards (which still squeek and crackle a bit alas!) - can I go on and use this varnish on the doors as well, or should I get a different varnish for the doors- and like what varnish should I get instead ? thanks for any tips.

Thank You one further question - does this advice hold good with wood floorboards, as I am replacing the chipboard with real floorboards, or do I have to do anything else ( I was fine bashing in nails but not very experienced using screws; just checking, countersunk means I use a fat drill bit...

sorry for duplicating post, first day on this website, but I have got the message :oops: - also that I have to screw down all the floorboards to stop them squeaking and cracking - but can I leave the nails already in and just put screws in next to them, or should the nails all come out first ?

My top floor of house (1965) - I have taken up all the "chipboard" type-floorboarding, (it was all broken up due to water damage and central heating installation) and want to lay down good old fashioned wood floor boards with nails - but I have come a bit of a cropper in the first room I tried...
