    Cracks under Steel Beam

Hi, thanks for all the comments and advice. It is clear what route to take. My son has requested I close this thread down so there will not be any further comments until this is resolved, which, as has been suggested, could take a while. I will post a follow up when it's all sorted out. Thanks...

    Cracks under Steel Beam

I am there again tomorrow, I'll do a top down sketch and take those measurements and will put a couple of acrows under while I'm there just to be safe.

No mention of Ltd Company on paperwork, site board, Web site or Companies House so possibly a sole trader - trading for 30 years according to web site

    Cracks under Steel Beam

The builder was asked for the SE calcs following the BC visit, nearly 2 weeks ago, and despite regular requests still has not provided them. He has been on-site and commented "I'm dealing with the calcs and am confident everything is OK" We will continue to request the calcs and see what BC say...

    Cracks under Steel Beam

The builder is inspecting it tomorrow and we are following BC advice, ie; BC has asked to see the SE design & Specs - the SE name was mentioned in past correspondence so he does exist. Let's see who's name is on the calcs the builder submits to BC - and we will take it from there.

The bottom plate looks to be rusty already, not been painted poss where it was welded by the beam supplier

Midway along the outer 10m beam is the crack in the block above the beam that BC identified. Is that due to flex, settlement, shrinkage or to be expected ? The left end of the beam had the original cracked blocks - in my 1st post - that were replaced - and it still has an acrow under it

    Cracks under Steel Beam

The builder has been paid in instalments but we've made sure we are behind the line regarding payment for work done and work still to be done. There is still a chunk ££ of the final quote outstanding I have no idea if there is an SE, if there isn't he's in deep over his head as BC want to see...

    Cracks under Steel Beam

Yep, 100mm for a 3m or 5m beam .. but for a 10m beam sat on a 100mm wide vertical padstone ? BC also pointed out cracks bang in the centre of the blockwork along the 10m beam, so it's flexed in the middle as well. We'll wait to see what specs he sends to BC and compare with what he fitted. It...

    Cracks under Steel Beam

Update: My son instructed BC not to do any any inspections unless my son approved it. That was to stop the builder trying to blag one through and getting it passed without us knowing which as commented would have put us in a difficult position. So today BC came out and had a good look. I was...

Any ideas how much that would cost, the job is in Manchester area ?

    Cracks under Steel Beam

No, I'm not there until tomorrow. I'll see if I can measure it from behind off steps and will measure the full length of the beam as well. But that is only of use when we get to see the calcs and check if it complies with the SE drawings.

    Cracks under Steel Beam

Yes I believe my son paid for BC and speaks to them directly although the builder has up to now asked BC directly to sign off the various stages of the build as it proceeded, eg trench, footings etc But I & my son will be there when BC come to inspect the steels to point out these issues. IF...

    Cracks under Steel Beam

If the Builder hasn't filed Structural Calcs - therefore not had them approved by BC - will BC refuse to sign off the steel work until they have seen the calcs, have agreed them and checked the work complies with the calcs ?
