    Check that the expansion pipe is the correct height measure the distance from the base of the boiler to the water level in the expansion tank.(in meters) and times it by 40 and add 150mm this will be the height at which the expansion pipe should terminate in to the tank.

    Check that there is water in the system by checking the level of water in the Feed and Expansion tank in the loft if there is water it may be an airlock consider using a desludger and flushing the system out refilling and then seeing what happens.

    Sounds like the boiler is ketteling use a sludge remover it is more gentle than a descaler as it would be likely to do more harm than good as your system is getting on a bit. Best of Luck John
