Well I was driving throung the country!! Do exhaust pipes have a lining at all that could be falling out. I drove to work today and my car didn't blow up so I susspose thats ok!!

I have an Escort N Reg (cvh) and after coming home from work today I noticed a "hairy mass" dangling from the exhaust pipe. I pulled it out and it is about 30 cm in length and fairly thick, and brown in colour. I have no idea what it is and whether I should be worried about it? Any thoughts...
