Yes that's fine. The terminals that connect to the switch were well corroded, I will give them a clean in the morning.

Many thanks kevplumb. The wiring loom in question has three wires, brown black and white. The valve or whatever is connected to the water rather than gas system. Is there any way I can check if this is the problem? ............................................... What a curious world...
