Cheers Ree, I tried to edit the post after i had, taken the door frame out, to add in what I had done but for some reason the other bit disappeared. Same door frame, but pic taken from the other side!! The plaster came away in that side, so it was easier to expose that beam

Thanks Ree, have removed the frame completely! See above. Advise much appreciated. We are going to get the kitchen and hallway re plastered!
