I installed a solar thermal panel from www.solarproject.co.uk 2 years ago.
Whole thing cost about £800 to install and integrate into my existing cylinder.
I'm self sufficient for hot water for about 6 months of the year.
I'm contemplating whether to install a back boiler into my wood...
I'd be grateful if anyone could comment on a schematic diagram I've drawn up of my existing 'Gas Gravity fed / pumped CH boiler' (on left of diagram) combined with a future solid fuel back boiler (on Right of diagram).

Is there a rule of thumb for size of Thermal store relative to boiler output?
e.g. If my Wood burning stove's back boiler had a quoted output of 5KW what would be an appropriate size of thermal store?
Do any Regs stipulate the use of Gate valves over Ball valves?
I'd rather use ball valves in my solar thermal project, as gate valves tend to cease up (at least that's what I've found) after a few years.
Thanks
You are correct, PV panels will payback much quicker than solar thermal (installed by a pro), but that's only because of FIT, and who pays for FIT?
If I understand correctly, "it's the suppliers who pass on the cost of the Feed-In Tariffs scheme to all their electricity customers.
... so the...
It's probably long past the moment you needed an answer, but for the benefit of anyone searching in the future here's a reply.
Try this formula:
Energy= Mass x Temperature rise x Specific Heat Capacity of Water
- Mass is volume of thermal store in litres eg. 200 litres
- Temperature...
Hi,
I'm about to start drawing plans for a block paved drive before laying it. I have a question regarding rain water runoff and drainage.
The road is approximately 150mm higher than the dpc of the house, so there will be a natural fall towards the house and consequently I need a way to...
