Ok, drain was filled with waste +water again today (probably about 10cm deep) so cleared it with a hose then filled up bath and kitchen sink with water and took lid of inspection chamber. Emptying sink made no difference to the gutter trap as they are completely seperate.

Survey says that there is a single inspection chamber outside and I'm sure there was originally a soil stack - they probably removed it when they did the building work about 20 years ago.
Provided there is a foul drain how exactly would a stack be installed - sorry don't know anything about...
