all i wanted to know is what setting on my multimeter to use to check the thermocouple 100% - if it is ok, then it must be gas valve, so i will have to ring up a gas reg. engineer.

the pilot flame heats the thermocouple tip properley, but when the button is released, the pilot flame goes out. i have visually checked it, cleaned it, checked its tight in the gas valve, remoed the interrupter metal pad and testedd as well. universal thermocouple fitted but seemed smaller...

I have the thermouple removed, and am testing it, but where abouts do the probes go.... on the ball? What setting is best to use on the multimeter? Maybe the gas valve is at fault then.... but how can you prove this, just by a process of elimination?

I know you can get thermocouple testers, but anyway of testing using multimeter? I've tested the resistance and that is fine, but trying to test the milivolts - how do you do this?

are universal thermcouple suitable fir every boiler with a perm pilot? My boiler pilot has gone out, and won't hold when relit. I have got a universal one. Having visually looked at the thermocouple tip and cleaned it, it still does not hold. I also have seen that there is an overheat...
