As I work in IT I know the kind of infrastructure behind the services that Flikr and Photobucket run and they are resilient. Just because you get a 404 message doesn't mean you've lost your images.

When we finally stripped the head down it does look like the microswitch had gone as you mention.
Get the new head today for £21 off ebay, local guy who's in the trade. So saved myself best part of £100 than buying it from Plumb Center

have you ever heard of photobucket or flickr they are photo hosting sites that you can setup and restrict access to.
I use them for the most important images we have and it is up to them to look after them..

Can you confirm
1. You are able to connect to the wireless/network without issue ?
2. Have you setup the port forwarding for the relevant port required by the DVR on the router ? So you are able to connect via the net ?

But agreed WEP is shocking security but some security camera only accept WEP so it may be the only option.
Not being funny or anything but why not purchase a cheap router like a netgear for £20 off ebay and use that instead of the old speedtouch modem.

I'd be tempted to boot into safe mode if you can then check the system logs for errors and attempt to rectify them before rebooting. If possible do a system restore from prior to IE8/PowerDVD
Alternatively try the F8 and load last known good configuration...it does sometimes work.
