Coving adhesive failure after 5 months

Are we talking plaster coving not the lightweight stuff? If you read the instructions on pretty much all coving adhesive it doesn't recommend fitting to a decorated surface as it won't bond. If you insist on trying score both the wall and ceiling surfaces to provide a key for the adhesive to...

    Masking Tape

Yellow frog tape, you can't go wrong. Unless the surface you tape to hasn't adhered properly, then it's a world of pain. Always test a less obscured area to make sure the paint your taping to is sound.

First layer for an uneven wall

If you want to try your hand at skimming the wall you'll need thistle multi finish. I will warn you though it's not as easy as the pros make it look.

Lime plaster crumbling away on internal wall

The middle shelf support has been removed along with the fixings at some point which has pulled the original plaster. You'll find if you remove the rest of the wardrobe the same will happen where fixings are involved. Wet it with water using a paint brush and fill it with a plaster filler or...

    1930s doors smell like death

You want something similar to Zinnser BIN a shellac sealer. They're recommended for stain blocking but also work with smells. Whether you can find a clear one you'll have to have a Google.

Mist coat or PVA primer on New Plaster .. Before painting

For your first coat use none vinyl based Matt emulsion watered down 60/40 paint to water. Plenty of good cheap options. Vinyl based comes with a sheen, or harder finish I'd imagine your kitchen paint is vinyl based so don't use it as your mist coat as it doesn't adhere great to fresh plaster...

    Poorly fitted carpet

My old man use to be a carpet fitter many a year back he's laid carpet throughout my house I did the underlay and gripper he did the cutting, stretching, door trims etc so I know enough. The stairs are real bad, shocking cutting. The bottom step is always a faff and may require gluing, nailing...

How best to hide cables etc

Yeah your never going to get away with a proper wood burning stove beneath a TV. The one I fitted is electric but with a real flame effect called Dimplex Opti Myst. It's real good works on water vapour. The heat is pumped out via the bottom so has dispersed by the time it hits the soundbar/TV...

How best to hide cables etc

Depending how for your sitting away from the TV it shouldn't be to high. I had those concerns in the pictures above but it's never been a problem even coming from a TV fixed a fair amount lower previously. It's all personal preference but take a look at recommended TV heights to seating...

How best to hide cables etc

Use D line trunking from the purple unit to behind the TV painted the same colour as the wall. In the trunking I'd recommend a long 2-4 way extension and 2 HDMI cables incase you ever use more devices in the future. Connect the TV and soundbar to the extension behind the TV. You'll also need...

Boiler Service cost - unresonabley high? Conflicted.

Had a couple service quotes recently one being £70-£150 depending on extent of work? The other £60 no mention of extent of work. Both gas safe obviously. Boiler is Vaillant condensing combi. Area Midlands. Years gone by I've never paid more than £60-80.

    Food-safe wood treatment

Osmo Top Oil, food safe, brilliant product. Used the clear matt on my oak worktops goes on lovely, leaves a great finish, spills just sit on the top, scratch resistant, never had food stain it. Finish does fade slightly after a couple years but rubbed surface back to wood, cleaned off and...

    Gloss that doesn’t yellow

Use a water based gloss rather than oil based. Harder to get a good finish but dries quick, doesn't smell as much and stays white.

    Single gang extension to double

Haha mine doesn't look quite like that. Not perfect but good enough for a DIYer.
