An update! Tried the old screwdriver trick and no joy without causing damage so emailed the manufacturer asking what tool was needed. They posted out (for free) a new cartridge, shroud and special tool. Basically like a box spanner but correct style & size. All sorted in 5 mins. Great...

Yes I'm trying to get the brass locking ring out but the spanners I have (and have begged and borrowed!) aren't narrow enough to get in the space. Likewise, the box spanners are hexagonal so won't grip
