    Damp patch mystery on ceiling

Thanks for your detailed replies. I agree re. finding the root cause and cleaning gutters, I will actually get these cleaned asap, I know this has to be done regularly regardless of the situation. There were problems with wet brickwork here in the past but those seem to be fixed, this patch is...

    Damp patch mystery on ceiling

Thanks for the quick reply - do you mean hack out the infected plaster and just re-plaster that area?

    Damp patch mystery on ceiling

Thanks for this reply. Just to clarify the photos are before and after shots of the same area. The fascia was not replaced, I'm pretty sure the roofer just put that thing on top. No other repairs were made. The tile headlap of 50mm - is there a fix for this without re-tiling the whole roof...

    Damp patch mystery on ceiling

Having done a little more research on this, do you think it could be possible that this is a sign of hygroscopic salts in the plaster? Just a (possibly slightly paranoid) thought.

    Damp patch mystery on ceiling

No lead valley, just the roof tiles. The tiles are not brand new, but they seem ok. The stain isn't too far from the wall actually, only about 3 inches or so. Here are a couple of pics from the roofer from back in february to show the work he did - he said water was coming in between the gutter...

    Damp patch mystery on ceiling

Thanks again - do you think there's any danger of water being trapped up there between the joists and the ceiling? You're right about the bubbling, I'm sure if there was a lot of water it would show up in a more drastic way, but if there's water I don't want to trap it and allow it to rot.

    Damp patch mystery on ceiling

Thanks John, I have just been up in the loft to double check around the whole area, I've lifted up the insulation material and it's all dry, the rafters are all dry, the area under the insulation is all dry. There is nothing else there, just the roof tiles and the lining under them, all dry. I...

    Damp patch mystery on ceiling

I have what looks like a bad damp patch on my ceiling. But it is completely dry to the touch. Backstory: This room is directly under the loft. I bought this house back in february, there was a wet patch in this spot caused by a leak coming from the gutter. I had that fixed, and also had the...

Wet chimney, and a blocked up fireplace?

Many thanks to you both. I like the idea of putting a vent above the cupboard. (As long as no damp exists below it). Do either of you think there could be a connection between the damp that existed in that kitchen (before the previous owners damp proofed it), and the blocked fireplace? The damp...

Wet chimney, and a blocked up fireplace?

Hi everyone, I'm trying to solve a puzzle here, would welcome any advice you may have. Just purchased a small victorian terrace. The chimney wall in the loft was soaking wet, survey advised removal of plaster to allow it to dry. I have done this, it's now hopefully drying out. However.. The...

    Buying wood for a desk

Could you be a bit more patronising? Jeez. Thanks for the suggestions everyone else. I was looking at real wood, something like walnut, or something similar to that. If too pricey, I don't mind laminate or mdf, as long as it can withstand general desk use in a design studio. I have a...

    Buying wood for a desk

Hi everyone, need a bit of help and advice re. buying some wood. I want to build 2 very simple desks using pre-made tressel legs, so essentially I just need to buy 2 pieces of wood cut down to a specific size. I've been trying to find places that do this in the London area, but the quotes I'm...
