So just wondering what kind of setup this type of open fire back boiler was designed and sold for. Maybe only for direct heating of DHW? (which i recall my parents house had years ago.)

Should have mentioned.... its an oil-fired boiler. Myson Velaire Vitesse with B9 burner to be precise.
The backboiler is on the open coal fire in the lounge. There's a little lever in the chimney throat which you swing to the left to make flames go up the back to heat the water in there.

Got a C-plan setup (gravity-fed DHW, tank-stat + 2-port valve and pumped CH.) There's a working back boiler on the lounge's open fire and I've got something a bit wierd going on. (Or maybe its normal.)
