Hi, I'm building an external staircase and had planned on pouring concrete footings for the newel posts, but a number of breeze blocks have become available which I'm considering using as 'pre-cast footings', since I've read of 'masonry' footings being used successfully for such applications...

Thanks Guys- I hadn't seen the post shoe, but this might well be OK. Thermo, please explain- I don't have any timber to fix the newel to, only the concrete footing (it's outside). Sorry if I'm missing something obvious here... Anything that will reduce the likelihood of the new posts...

Hi The newel posts of an exterior staircase have been cemented directly into the ground and have now rotted, as have most of the stringers, so I'm looking at a complete repacement. My inclination is to build the new staircase, dig some new concrete footings and bolt the newel posts down...
