OK, thanks for much for your replies Andy. I did put washers on along with the backnuts, but as you suggest I will test again tomorrow for leaks and might just run a bit of silicon around for good measure. It's a bit hard to tell if it leaks or not because the cold where the feed comes in...

In both our toilets the ballvalves had given up the ghost (we live in a very hard water area where everything gets really scaled up) and we were getting a constant drip out of both overflows. Rather than bothering re-washering them etc. I just bought a couple of new valves and fitted them...

OK, thanks for the replies guys. I've got the system running just now and that rad is blasting away fully (obviously with no thermostat to regulate it), so as it it very rarely used I'll shut it off via the lockshield tomorrow. Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply. Yep, it probably is a bit different than it was before - as long as the water level was below the overflow I wasn't too fussy. I was actually going to experiment with it at different heights -- maybe lower the float to the point where the minimum level of water comes in...
