Phoned Heatline Monday, they gave me a job reference and the number of their local engineer.
They came today and replaced the fan, sounds MUCH quieter. good service in my book. Thanks for the tips here chaps. Now to build a case for it and the missus can have no more complaints :wink:

Today I asked a neighbour who is a plumber to have a listen and he said it's deffo the fans too noisy. Ironically he bought a new combi a few weeks ago from Stax which he is going to use to replace his current one in the summer.

It's more of a spindle /bearing kind of noise I think, I imagine catching wires would be a more of a rattle/ rachet sound? and as it's been running a while would have worn through the wires by now with friction. I'll have a quick gander though, thanks.

As the installer didn't say anything at the time I sort of assumed it was just typical of the model, and I thought it may settle down.
Maybe he didn't say anything because I bought the boiler ?

I've taken the front cover and the zinc cover off to try to trace the racket., and althought the burners are pretty noisy, the really loud noise is from the fan housing in the top left corner. It sounds like a plane taking off with the cover...
I must confess to being a bit of a skinflint :D but from the reviews I read it didn't seem to be too bad a buy, cheap but not obviously nasty.
