Thank you to everyone who replied and helped! Solved the problem it was the wall switch rather than the wiring. New switch in plac, lighting upstairs and down and can be turned on and off. It's been a pig of a task but I am proud of me for perserving.... I am a woman who doesn't like being...

Forgive the dodgy photos:- I have the (black) live in a connector which is connected to the brown from new light I have the reds and 1 x brown from ceiling in 1 connector I have the earths from both connected together and then the blue and blacks from the ceiling connected to the blue...

Promise faithfully now only live connected to new light brown and other brown from ceiling rose now connected with red and still can't switch it off!!!

They are - I have connected the black (live) with the brown from ceiling rose (also did it with brown from ceiling rose in with reds) and then they are connected to the brown from the new light. So I have light but can't switch it off?

Wahey! I have light!!! thank you so so much!!! One prob is that the light switch (on the wall) doesn't switch off.... simple job?

This is a life saver! So I have now bought a multitester and identified my live.... so the blue in my rose pendant goes to the? and the brown to the?

So this tester thing????? Also when I find the live what am I to do?

There was no tape or sleeve on the blacks to begin with - so how to do I find the live one?

I want to change my ceiling rose to a spot light and successfully did so friday - until I turned the light off and all the lights went out. Since then I havent had any light and have read and read and am utterly confused. This is what I started with This is what I have (1) and (2)...
