    Fitting UPVC double-glazed window questions

I forgot to ask, but what type of foam is it that should be used for installing double-glazed windows and filling cavities? Can you provide me with a name or a link please?

    Fitting UPVC double-glazed window questions

Right I understand. But surely if there was a lintel going through both skins, wouldn't we get issues with damp coming through? Assuming the lintel is not running across both skins, should I tell them to fill the top cavity too?

I can see the lintels on the outside....not sure if they are sat on both inner and outer walls....why do you ask?

    Fitting UPVC double-glazed window questions

Thanks very much again Martin. Our house is a random-stone and brick built. As you can imagine, the cavity is not equal and is random in size too, so I assume that due to it being random, expanding foam is the best option? From the photo below of the current window, you'll notice that the top...

    Fitting UPVC double-glazed window questions

Thank you for your reply Martin. What brand of expanding foams are good/bad? I can stand and watch, but I do need to know what I'm looking out for, hence a step-by-step video or website instructions would be helpful. For example, how do they close random stone and brick cavities? Or how...

    Fitting UPVC double-glazed window questions

Hi everyone, I'm about to replace one of our damaged bedroom window with a new double-glaze window. Hopefully it'll be here sometime next week. However, to make sure that the installers are not cowboys and are fitting the window correctly, can anyone please: 1. Give me any step-by-step...

Help me resolve this basement condensation nightmare....

Hi guys, Sorry for the late reply. I had a bit of a disaster - I accidently smashed one of my double-glazed windows and have had to find someone to sort it out...still need to deal with it though. Okay, so here's what I did....For the single-glazed window, I shoved a carrier bag as per John's...

Help me resolve this basement condensation nightmare....

Thanks John and Woody. John - Yes, that's right, I've been searching online and desiccants are ideal for cold areas, whereas compressor types are suitable for rooms around 15C or more. Although my thinking was to go for compressor type and eventually move it into the house hallway as I have...

Help me resolve this basement condensation nightmare....

That's much appreciated. I think the first cheapest way is to seal the vents and see how it goes. But do you know what I can use as a temporary basis to do this? Also would I need to seal both inside and outside or just the inside? Lastly can you recommend a dehumidifier for a large...

Help me resolve this basement condensation nightmare....

Thanks woody. But is that humidity basically the outside air coming in? I do live approx 650ft above sea level. I use the cellar to store diy tools, but these are all rusting away. Since this is not a habitable room and heating would just go wasted, what's the solution? Would blocking up...

Help me resolve this basement condensation nightmare....

Hi guys, I'm having to deal with an ongoing issue in the basement. This is a semi-detached property built around 1935. Basically we have 2 air bricks and 1 old vent within a window in the basement approx 1.8mtrs from floor. I know this might sound obvious, but they are all above outside...

Cutting curved stones for kidney shaped patio?

The nail/wood idea is brilliant, thanks. I know you said that the dye won't stain if dry, but you've said that I do a semi dry mix, so surely that would stain it, wouldn't it?

Cutting curved stones for kidney shaped patio?

Thank you very much. I can brush out the dry mortar, but what shall I do with the current partial pointing that's already hardened? It took me a whole day just to grind out a small patch of pointing and just hope I don't have to repeat that again. Also what about the dye colour I've used? If...

Cutting curved stones for kidney shaped patio?

Sorry to trouble you again. I did what you said and took out all the pointing using a grinder. I then did a dry cement/sand/dye colour mix and brushed it in. After that I dampened the brushed-in mortar and went over it with a pointing trowel. It seemed to have done the job. However I've...
