I live in a 60s built council house so sounds like that's what they are. More than likely live as the old gas fireplace is like and sealed the same way. Any ideas of how to make them less ugly when tiling?

Looking to tile my kitchen. Have no idea what these two are/do. Would prefer to remove them but don't want to ruin something! Any help appreciated. Thanks
