They reckon if they had built the Hoover Dam (built 20's or 30's) in one big pour - it would still be setting today!
As it was they did it multiple sections with cooling channels built in to help it set.
Thanks your replies all, however I'm trying to avoid adding any extra height to the paviors that will be sitting on the existing concrete - as they should then join up the with next door neighbours!

I think they must have used sharp sand for the rendering in my house when it was built (late 50's). Whenever I drill into the wall, I always seem to hit a stone which deflects the drill bit and makes the hole bigger than I want.
Therefore DON'T use sharp sand for rendering!
