At risk of sounding immensely dumb, how do I use the ignition retarder? Do I press is at the start of the journey?

My automatic gearbox has a few manual low gears and also a button with an ice symbol on it. I don't have the manual so can't check what this is for and how best to use it. With the icy weather and a long journey ahead I'm thinking these may come in useful but don't want use them wrong. Any ideas?
