I have employed the Stuckinarut suggestion and ripped out the programer and stat and wired the Hive up as described direct from the boiler.

Thanks RandomGrinch for your suggestion. That is something I will keep in mind, but my preferred option would be to removed both stat an programmer and have the hive on the wall in their place, and to have the receiver in the loft near the boiler. Do you have a wiring suggestion for that option...
It’s definitely a combi boiler. The confusion my be due to the fact that we replaced the original boiler that had a tank connected with it, with the above combi boiler, but continued to use this programmer for heating but not for hot water as we were getting it on demand through the taps
