Is it possible to add a solid fuel boiler to backup a standard combinational boiler? Maybe just for the radiators if not the hot water. I have the space and flue where an old conventional boiler was. Also, I can get a good supply of free wood during the course of my work. Any advice appreciated.

Sorry to differ but I always had more success with paint stripper. On stubborn stuff it can take 3 or 4 goes but with patience it does the job. I prefer it to the noise/fumes/scorching/heat of a heat gun. (And you can leave your smoke alarm batteries in). Remember to wear gloves/safety glasses...
