The plumber spent about 20 mins. He replace the siphon system with a new one, changed the inlet tap connector and charged 80 quid.

Thanks Belboz. Yes the water supply can be easily shut. I must confess I have never disassemble a cistern before. You may be right about the flap valve being worn out or failed. I realise that when I push the ball down manually to increase the hydrostatic pressure, the cistern flushes alright...

Sorry my bad. Yes I meant to say there is no flush.

My cistern fills up alright but it does not flash into the pan. Does anybody have an idea as to the reason why this is happening?
