Yeah as soon as the dial is turned from off to any position the valve is energised.

thanks for pointing me in the direction of pressure chamber and switch. Not being one for warnings I disconnected the switch and blew down the pipe to dislodge and build up and check for flow. There didn't seem to be any blockage so I assume it's the switch.

If the softener nozzle is blocked would that cause the main nozzle to continuously flow?
