Image 2 shows the earthing to the stopcock. the earth goes across the house and is then earthed into the C U (the earth cable is actually behind the white cable in Images 1, 3, &4). Image 1 shows the other earth running from the main gas supply to the CU. The other black pipe next to the gas...

Thanks. The rising main is earthed and so presumably, if there are no plastic pipes I could assume that effectively all the other copper pipes and metal appliances are earthed and that I only need worry if there are plastic pipes which put appliances beyond the earth ? but even then, I can't...

    Switch Return

Thanks everybody. It's now sorted. I just connected one cable to the old fixing with a bulb and it worked so obviously that was the ring and the other cable was the switch.

    Switch Return

It is 5 amp lighting circuit with two 3 core cables hanging from the ceiling. The old 1965 light fitting had 3 terminals, all identical, none marked. The wiring was done so that the fitting could be utilised for the switch wire. The replacement light has a connector with live, neutral and earth...

I've just had a new boiler and the electrician said that my Consumer Unit is out of date as 17th Regulations mean a new one will have RCD's. I raised the subject because I wanted to know whether my bath (which is all concealed plumbing) might be earthed. Electrician said A new CU would provide...

    Old Flue

My old floor-standing Potterton Kingfisher II has been replaced by a wall-mounted condensing boiler with it's own flue. I now have a 'redundant' flue. It was a flexible tube which is inside a brick chimney passing up through the roof. As the photo shows, the short length which connected it to...

    Temperature Settings

Thanks I will set the tank at 65. as the thermostat is about 1/3 up, I assume the water at the top where it is drawn off will actually be slightly hotter. I will set the boiler at 70. As for the TVR's, the heating engineer just installed them when re-piping the system. I think his idea was...

    Temperature Settings

I have a vaillant Ecotec 18 pumped open vent Y Plan with room stat and cylinder stat. The room Stat is in the lounge. Is this ideal or should it be in the hall ? (I hardly ever use the lounge fire). All rads have thermostatic valves. Should I replace the lounge valves with non-thermostat...
