thanks - that's what I thought but just wanted confirmation. The lights are in a garage conversion that was done in the 60's/70's and it looks like the existing lights have been there since then (none of them need an earth). There is no ceiling light so I'm not sure what circuit they've wired...

I wanted to replace my wall lights. The new ones are metal cased and must be earthed but the cables for the existing lights do not contain an earth. Is there a way around this?
