Sounds like its cutting the power to the fan when it makes the noise, this means its not the gas valve because if it was the fan would still be running, the problem u have could be pcb or the demand dropping out then coming back, the potentiometer causes this fault on these boilers

The relay in your receiver is not switching over, this is a common fault with these stats, I'm afraid you will need to replace it, I would change it for a Honeywell cm921
